CHAPTER NINE

If I put the antifreeze in the chocolate covered cherries he loved so much, it might work. My biggest issue would be getting the candies there without him asking why or how I got them without him.

Maybe if I asked for them and was really good, he would bring them to me. I could swing by the store on the way home and get a bottle of antifreeze to hide. I had to stop anyway and get a pregnancy test.

“Find everything alright?” the skinny, bald man asked when I placed my two items on the counter of the general store.

“Yes,” I said without looking up.

“Twenty-two even,” he said.

It would take almost all I had stashed away to pay for the two items I had. That hurt to know I wouldn’t have much of a backup, but if it worked it would be worth it.

The half mile back to the house seemed like it took forever. I wanted to be back behind my walls I knew and to get off the street before anyone recognized me and told Jeremy I had been out.

It was a little after noon by the time I unlocked my front door. My hand was sore from carrying the jug of antifreeze home.

Once inside, I looked around for a safe place to hide my poison where he wouldn’t fine it. I went to the laundry room and put it in the cabinet behind the laundry soap and fabric softener. My hand shook as I closed the door to the cabinet. If he found it or caught on to what I was doing, he would kill me.

I brought the pregnancy test with me upstairs, went into the bathroom, and shut the door. I was the only one home but wanted the extra privacy. After opening the package, I read the directions on the thin piece of paper they wrapped the test in. It said the first morning urine was the best to detect if early in the pregnancy, so I put the test up and waited until the next morning.

Going back to the kitchen, I made two pieces of buttered toast and heated up another cup of coffee. I went over how I would go through with the plans I had set in motion and what would happen to me if it worked and Jeremy died. I would be on my own for the first time in my life. Without having a job, not much saved up, and no access to any of our financial stuff, I would be starting over with nothing.

I needed to go through some of the files he kept and see if I could figure out what we had and what we didn’t. I knew he was smart and probably had our money tied up in multiple accounts, but I didn’t know where or how much we had.

I went to our room, opened the closet, and pulled out the locked safe from his side. I tried to remember where I had seen him pull a key from.
